Marriage & Remarriage
Marriage is a sacrament of the Church, and is never to be entered into without serious thought, planning and prayer.
Any Episcopal bishop, priest or deacon may solemnize a marriage (a deacon may not pronounce a nuptial blessing). For a first marriage, the clergy of any congregation may guide the couple through the process, including premarital counseling and the wedding service. Policies governing membership, fees, preparation and other matters vary from congregation to congregation.
If one or both of the persons to be married has been previously married and divorced, permission must be sought from the bishop of the diocese in which the wedding is to take place. Those who have been married and divorced must demonstrate that issues relating to the termination of previous marriage(s) have been addressed, and that the couple is committed to the success of the new relationship.
