Multicultural Ministries
The Diocese of Los Angeles is located in one of the most ethnically diverse geographic areas in the nation and takes seriously the call to seek and serve Christ in all persons. Bishop Assistant Sergio Carranza, in addition to his pastoral duties, is multicultural minister for the diocese. Part-time staff support is provided by Petra Barragan.
The diocese sponsors several commissions that offer support and networking opportunities for Episcopalians of Asian, Black, Latino, Native American and other backgrounds.
The Kaleidoscope Project, originally funded as a diocesan program and now a self-supporting ministry, assists congregations faced with changing demographics to reach out to their new neighbors in faith and evangelism.
Weekly worship opportunities in the diocese are offered in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Yearly special services of Holy Eucharist commemorate spiritual giants of the faith, such as Absalom Jones and Martin Luther King.
The Rev. Debbie Royals is program officer for Native American ministries. Her work includes a number of new initiatives, including an alliance with United Native American Youth Los Angeles, which guides and supports young Native Americans in fulfilling their own gifts while exploring and honoring their heritage.
In addition, Royals has begun a Native American women’s group, which held a two day retreat in August to share stories and ministries. They are planning another gathering for 2008.
Royals meets regularly with deaneries, congregations and individuals to offer education, resources and leadership for ministry to, by and with Native Americans. She also raises funds to continue the diocese’s ministry in this area.
